About TCA Deep Peel

This information is intended for general information only and should not be considered as medical advice on the part of Health-Tourism.com. Any decision on medical treatments, after-care or recovery should be done solely upon proper consultation and advice of a qualified physician.

What is a TCA peel?

TCA is a non-toxic chemical (trichloracetic acid) that has been used to carry out skin peels more than two decades. It's a relative of vinegar (acetic acid). When TCA is used on the skin, it makes the top layers of cells dry up and peel off for several days to a week. When the old skin is peeled off, it exposes a new layer of undamaged skin that has a more even color and smoother texture.

What is a TCA peel used for?

It is most often used for:

  • To decrease age spots and brown spots
  • To treat some kinds of acne
  • To improve melasma
  • To improve the texture of leathery, the sun damaged skin and impart more glow
  • To decrease fine lines

What areas may be treated?

The legs, chest, arms, face, back, and neck. TCA peels might be very affordable on the body since larger areas may be done at less cost compared to a laser. But the risks of issues can also be greater except if the dermatologist is extremely experienced with TCA on the body.

When contemplating peels of non-facial areas, it is vital that you understand that these areas don't heal as well as the face, and the expected results aren't as predictable. It is vital to note that you must never peel more than a small percentage of the body at one time so as to avoid any possibility of possible toxicity.

How long do the effects of a TCA peel last?

This will depend on the depth of the peel along with the extent of your continuing sun exposure. Your dermatologist must be able to offer you an approximation.

When will you see results from my TCA peel?

Once you finish peeling you will notice results. Your skin must continue to improve for 30-60 days provided that you are protected from the sun.

What does a TCA peel feel like? Is it painful?

The peel goes something like this. The moment you arrive, you will be taken into a room and be requested to get comfortable on an examination table. Your skin will be cleaned many times with alcohol, liquid cleanser and possibly acetone. It is vital that all the oil is off the skin so the peel solution will penetrate uniformly. Then the peel solution is applied and often this is performed in two phases. You will feel some sensation of heat and stinging while the peel solution is active. At times a small handheld fan is used for cooling in this phase. Then an ointment is spread over to quicken healing and post care instructions are provided.

How will you look like soon after the treatment, and what will the healing time be?

You will normally peel for roughly a week with a medium peel. The skin will be a light yellow after the treatment for 1-2 hours. This shade will slowly fade. The skin will be a little redder for two to three days after the peel and feel tight.

Stay away from all sun exposure. You will start to peel roughly 48-72 hours after the procedure and the peeling will last usually 2-5 days. There is no pain however the skin appears as if it has severe sunburn. You may be very sensitive to sunlight for 4-8 weeks after therefore do not plan any sunny vacations for at least one month.

What are the likely complications and side effects of a TCA peel ?
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Wound Healing
  • Pigment Changes
  • Swelling
  • Scarring
  • Eye Exposure
  • Sun sensitivity
  • Accutane
  • Cold Sores

How must you look after my your skin after a peel?

Your physician will provide you with specific instructions; however, some general guidelines are cited below. Wash nightly with a mild cleanser such as Cetaphil and take out any makeup very carefully. Apply a thick, bland moisturizer such as Skinceuticals Epidermal Repair, Cetaphil Cream, or Vanicream Cetaphil. Seek advice from your doctor when makeup can be applied. You will have to increase your use of a moisturizer after the peel since your skin will be temporarily drier. Multiple doctors ask you to stay away from all sun exposure for 2-8 weeks.
