About Ventral Discectomy

This information is intended for general information only and should not be considered as medical advice on the part of Health-Tourism.com. Any decision on medical treatments, after-care or recovery should be done solely upon proper consultation and advice of a qualified physician.

What is Ventral Discectomy?

This procedure is used to reduce nerve compression. The operation normally takes place at the neck to remove a herniated disk. At times as people age, the spinal disks may start to wither and thus compress the holes through which nerves leave the spinal column. This can cause immense problems for a person. This procedure is used as a last resort when all other types of treatment have failed.

Diagnosis

A diagnosis involves a doctor feeling around the spinal column for tenderness. Afterwards, the patient is required to perform some exercises. This is done in an effort to determine what is causing neck pain.

Afterwards, one of these advanced imaging techniques will be recommended:

Myelogram - this imaging technique involves injecting fluid into the spinal column. When an X-ray is taken, it reveals any areas of compression.

MRI Scan - this type of imaging helps to reveal the exact location of the herniated disk(s).

CT Scan - it takes multiple x-rays of the spine and helps to create a clear image of the spinal column.

X-ray - this type of imaging cannot reveal a herniated disk. However, it assists to rule out other causes of neck pain such a bone tumors.

How it is Done

The doctor makes an incision through the front of the neck. He/she then proceeds to expose the herniated disk and slice it out. In most cases, all the material that makes up the disk is pulled out. He/she will then proceed to enlarge the channels through which the nerves leave the vertebrae. This will ensure that future problems with nerve compression do not occur.

The cavity created is usually sealed with a bone graft. This ensures that the vertebrae do not fuse irregularly. In addition, the doctor may use titanium pins to stabilize the spine. The titanium plate is put in place to stabilize the healing process.

Days admitted : Depending on the extent of the surgery, one may have to stay in the hospital for up to three days under observation. Soon afterwards, one is discharged with a special neck brace. This brace should never be taken off for any reason. The brace will remain in place for about eight weeks or as recommended by the physician.

Recovery : Physical therapy is highly recommended during this period. It helps to quicken the healing process. Other therapies such as acupuncture have proven useful after a ventral discectomy. The patient needs to take lots of rest and eat foods that promote body healing. It would also be a good idea to avoid engaging in intensive activities. Most people are usually able to return to their normal lives. However, people who play intensive contact sport are advised against reporting for work ever again. The risk of dislocating the disc is too high. In most cases, if a relapse occurs, it can be life threatening.

Risks : As with any surgery, there is a high risk of infection. In addition, the operation could lead to life-threatening situations. Depending on the location of the herniated disk, one could be permanently crippled or die on the operating table.
