What is GIFT?
Gamete intra-fallopian transfer (GIFT) is a fertility procedure similar to IVF but instead of the eggs being fertilized in the laboratory, the eggs and sperm are placed in the fallopian tubes and fertilization occurs in the body.

How is GIFT carried out?

  • The woman takes medication to suppress hormones involved in the menstrual cycle and then fertility drugs to stimulate egg production.
  • When mature, eggs are collected with a needle guided by ultrasound.
  • Up to three eggs are inserted into the fallopian tubes along with sperm from the donor partner using a laparoscope.

Who is a suitable candidate for GIFT?
GIFT may be suitable if you have unexplained infertility but at least one fallopian tube that is open and normal. If the donor male has a low sperm count, GIFT may be used. Some couples undertake GIFT for ethical reasons because fertilization takes place inside the body.

What are the chances of success with GIFT?
According to Baby Center, on average there is a 21 percent chance of successfully delivering a baby with one cycle of GIFT. Younger women have a higher success rate.

Duration of procedure/surgery : One full cycle of GIFT takes around 4 to 6 weeks. The egg collection and insertion procedure takes around 30 minutes.

Days admitted : None. You will not need to stay overnight following egg collection and insertion.

Anesthesia : Egg collection is typically carried out under general anesthesia or sedation.

Recovery : Patients rest for a short time following egg collection but recovery time is minimal in the GIFT procedure.

Risks : - Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. - Egg collection and insertion through laparoscopy is an invasive surgery and may cause infection or bleeding. - Multiple births. - Ectopic pregnancy.

After care : - You may experience cramps following egg collection that can be eased with pain killers. - Side effects from fertility drugs may require a change of medication.
