What is Cervical Cyst Removal?
Cervical cyst removal is the procedure by which a mucus-filled cervical cyst is removed from the surface of the cervix.

How is a Cervical Cyst Removed?
A cervical cyst may be removed using a colposcopy procedure. This is a procedure similar to the Pap smear procedure that is used to remove cervical polyps. In a colposcopy to remove a cervical cyst, magnifying equipment is used to maximize the view. The patient needs to lie down in the dorsal lithotomy position. A speculum is put in the vagina, and acetic acid is applied to the cervix.

The cyst may be removed by using electrocutery and cryofreezing. However, new cysts may still appear after the procedure.

How to Prepare for the Procedure

  • The patient needs to go through a medical evaluation.
  • The doctor should be informed about any ailments and medication that the patient may be taking.
  • The patient should not be pregnant, and in some cases the patient goes through a pregnancy test before the procedure.

Days admitted : Cervical cyst removal is usually performed as an outpatient procedure.

Anesthesia : Most patients go through cervical cyst removal without any anesthesia. Some patients are given topical anesthesia.

Recovery : - The patient will require follow-up sessions.
- Patients may go through a session in which they are counseled on safe sex and usage of condoms that may prevent cervical tumors that result from prostaglandin in semen.
- If the patient smokes, the patient may go through a smoking cessation program.

Risks : Risks involved in cervical cyst removal are rare. However those that occur include:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Allergic reactions
- Discomfort

After care : The patient should inform the doctor immediately if the following symptoms occur:
- Bleeding or spotting in between normal periods
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Pain or bleeding during sex
