Professional Experience A/Prof Lingam Gopal is a senior consultant in department of ophthalmology at the National university Hospital. His field of specialisation is in vitreo retinal diseases.

A/Prof Gopal completed his basic medical education from Andhra medical college in Visakhapatnam, India in 1979. He then did post graduation in ophthalmology from Post graduate institute of medical education and research, Chandigarh, India in 1982. Subsequently he was also awarded the Diploma from the National board of examinations in 1984, India. He did his fellowship in vitreo retinal surgery from Medical Research Foundation, Chennai in 1983, India. He obtained the Fellowship of Royal college of surgeons, Edinburgh in 2002. He also passed the International council of ophthalmology examinations in 2000 (part 1) and 2001 (part 2).

After the vitreo retinal fellowship in 1983, he joined as a consultant at the Medical research foundation (Sankara Nethralaya), Chennai, India. He worked there in various capacities as clinician, researcher and academician. He served as Head of department of vitreo retinal services from 1990 to 1998; Assistant medical director from 1998 to 2004; Medical director from 2004 to 2006; Chairman elect from 2006 to 2007; Chairman from 2007 to 2009; Director research from 2009 to 2011, before joining the National university hospital. He also served as Head of department of neuro ophthalmology from 1984 to 2009 and President of Vision research Foundation from 2004 to 2009.

During the period 1983 to 2011, he was continuously involved in care of patients with vitreo retinal diseases and performed over 20000 complicated vitreo retinal surgeries. He was also involved in care of patients with intra ocular tumors.

He joined NUH as senior consultant on in April 2011 after receiving specialist accreditation. His research interests include Coloboma of choroid, retinopathy of prematurity, internal tamponading agents, vitreolysis and newer instrumentation.
Awards He is the recipient of 20 awards, including the University prize in General surgery in 1979; Best outgoing fellow award from Medical Research foundation in 1984; Alim oration award from Bangladesh ophthalmological society; L C Dutta award for best scientific paper published in Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2005; Life time achievement award from Mumbai ophthalmological society; American academy achievement award in 2008.
