About A/Prof Chew's specialty is in glaucoma surgery and research, particularly angle-closure glaucoma. He is helping to develop various new laser therapies for glaucoma such as modified iridoplasty and iridotomy.

Current research interests include investigating the link between genetics and angle-closure glaucoma.

A/Prof Chew is also the editor of the Asian Journal of Ophthalmology and is on the review board of various other international journals such as the British Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. International publications where his work from 1997 can be found include the Archives of Ophthalmology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, and the British Journal of Ophthalmology.

Professional Experience A/Prof Chew is a Senior Consultant at the Department of Ophthalmology, NUH and Associate Professor at Ophthalmology Department, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. Previously the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at NUH from Aug 2001 to Dec 2010, A/Prof Chew is now the Strategic Director for International Outreach.

Over the last 15 years, apart from establishing a research group investigating angle-closure glaucoma at the NUS, he also spearheaded ophthalmologic research collaborations in institutions in USA and UK such as New York Eye & Ear Infirmary and Moorfields Eye Hospital.
