About Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy is the newest procedure for weight loss surgery.
Sleeve gastrectomy surgery is a laparoscopic procedure that removes 75-85% of the stomach leaving behind a smaller, tube-shaped stomach or "sleeve". The new smaller stomach limits the amount of food that is required to feel full and leads to weight loss.
Additionaly, the removal of the majority of the stomach also results in the elimination of hormones produced within the stomach which stimulate hunger. The stomach continues to function normally after the procedure.
Expected weight loss:
The expected weight loss from Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery is 40-80% of the patient's excess weight.
Patients that undergo sleeve gastrectomy usually lose more weight than those who had gastric banding surgery, but less than those who had gastric bypass.
Duration of procedure/surgery:
1 hour
Days admitted:
Usually 1 day at the hospital.
Anesthesia:
General
Recovery:
Usually one week.
Risks:
Infection, leaking of the sleeve, and blood clots.
