Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus (the womb). The uterus may be completely or partially removed. The ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed, depending on the health needs of the patient.

Partial Hysterectomy
A partial hysterectomy is the removal of the upper portion of the uterus, leaving the cervix intact.

Total Hysterectomy
A total hysterectomy is removal of the entire uterus (including the cervix).

Radical Hysterectomy
Removes the whole uterus, the tissue on both sides of the cervix, and the upper part of the vagina.

Hysterectomy surgery options:

Abdominal Hysterectomy: done through an abdominal incision.

Vaginal Hysterectomy: done through a vaginal incision.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: done through laparoscopic incisions (small incisions on the abdomen).

Da Vinci® (robotic) Hysterectomy: done through the use of a robotic surgical device through small incisions in the abdomen.

Days admitted:
Usually 1-2 days at the hospital.

Recovery:
Recovery will usually take 3-6 weeks. Laparoscopic and robotic surgery require a shorter recovery time.
