What is Chin Reduction Surgery?
Chin reduction surgery is carried out in order to alter the appearance of a protruding or large chin. Chin reduction surgery can improve the balance and proportions of the face and the profile.
Chin reduction is carried out by removing and reshaping parts of the jaw bone in a surgical procedure. Fat can also be removed from the chin in a liposuction procedure.
Chin reduction surgery is also known as Mentoplasty or Genioplasty.

How is Chin Reduction surgery carried out?
The surgeon makes an incision beneath the chin or in the mouth. The surgeon then cuts the jaw bone, removes excess bone and reshapes the remaining bone to the desired specifications. The jaw bone is repositioned and held together, and the area is sutured.

Duration of procedure/surgery:
A Mentoplasty will typically last between 1 and 2 hours.

Days admitted:
Chin reduction surgery often requires an overnight stay in hospital.

Anesthesia:
The surgeon carries out a chin reduction procedure under general anesthesia or local anesthesia, depending on the preference of the surgeon and the patient.

Recovery:
- It is normal after chin reduction surgery to have swelling and bruising, this should disappear after around 2 weeks.
- Eating, yawning, talking and moving the jaw will be difficult for the first few days after chin reduction surgery.
- You’ll be able to return to work after 1 week.
- Full activity levels can be resumed after one month to six weeks, when the chin should be healed and final results will be seen.

Risks:
Chin reduction surgery is a relatively simple procedure and complications after surgery are rare.

Risks include:

- Infection.
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia.
- Dissatisfaction with results leading to a second procedure.
- Excessive bruising and swelling.
- Nerve damage resulting in temporary or permanent numbness.

After care:
- Follow a diet of soft foods and liquids for up to a week after chin reduction surgery.
- Get lots of rest in the first few days following surgery.
- Avoid smoking for two weeks.
- Take prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection.
