||Derek Leroith MD PhD is the appointed Director of the “Diabetes and Metabolism Clinical Research Center of Excellence”, scheduled to arrive at the Legacy Heritage Clinical Research Institute at Rambam by October 2010. Currently Dr. LeRoith is the Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Diseases and Director of the Metabolism Institute, at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, NY.
Dr. LeRoith has worked at the NIH since 1979 in the field of Endocrinology and Diabetes and rose to be Diabetes Branch Chief at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda MD, a position he held until 2005.
His main interests have focused on the role of insulin and the insulin-like growth factors in normal physiology and disease states, including obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and cancer. He has utilized genetic manipulation of mouse genes to create mouse models of Type 2 diabetes to study the metabolism, complications and therapies. More recently, he has been studying the mechanisms involved in the increased risk and poor outcomes of cancer in Obesity and Diabetes. Dr. LeRoith has published over 550 research and review articles on these topics.
