What is Shoulder Surgery?

The shoulder is the most flexible joint in the human body. It is also a very complex part of the human body. The shoulder is made of various muscles and connective tissue; all of which could get easily injured. Shoulder surgery is the procedure meant to correct any problems that may arise in the shoulder. Many different procedures have been developed, which are targeted at restoring normal function in the shoulder.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing a shoulder injury is relatively straightforward. The doctor will require examining the patient’s medical history. For instance, he or she would need to know if the patient has suffered any other previous injuries. The shoulder is interconnected with many other muscles and this may cause pain in the shoulder. A doctor will request to know the patients occupation. In most cases, shoulder pain is caused by overuse. In some cases, an MRI scan will be conducted. An X-ray scan may not be of much use unless the injury was caused by a trauma. In addition, a blood tests may be needed to determine if the patient is suffering from any other type of illness.

Treatment

Sometimes the doctor will order a surgical operation. However, if the shoulder is not badly injured, one may be required to stop using the shoulder for a few weeks. During this time, the patient is given some ointments, which are meant to reduce inflammation.

The treatment may be conducted arthroscopically. This will typically entail inserting a thin tube, which contains surgical equipment. This will be used to treat any injuries that are on the shoulder joint. Sometimes arthroscopic surgery is not possible. In such an instance, open surgery is conducted where a huge incision is made. If a ligament is torn, it is usually reattached to the shoulder blade with special anchors made of titanium. It may also entail bringing the edges of the torn ligament together. Surgery may also entail shaving spurs that develop inside the shoulder.

Days admitted : The period one is admitted will depend on the type of procedure conducted. In most cases, one should be able to leave the hospital after a night under observation. However, this will vary according to procedure conducted. If there was no operation conducted, any treatment is conducted on an outpatient basis.

Recovery : Immediately after a shoulder operation, one needs to keep the shoulder as still as possible. The doctor may also recommend regular checkups to make sure the shoulder is healing well. The amount of pain varies from one individual to another. However, people should expect the shoulder to be quite painful after an operation. After about six weeks, patients are advised to attend physical therapy. This is an effort to prevent muscle atrophy. It is also important in determining if the shoulder is healing properly. The first sessions will be painful. However, if one feels the level of pain is excessive, they should get the shoulder examined.

After care : When the shoulder is recovered, one should avoid heavy exercise for the rest of their life. In most cases, this could mean changing occupations. It is necessary to prevent becoming crippled.
