About Pectoral Implants

This information is intended for general information only and should not be considered as medical advice on the part of Health-Tourism.com. Any decision on medical treatments, after-care or recovery should be done solely upon proper consultation and advice of a qualified physician.
What are Pectoral Implants?
Pectoral implants are carried out in order to enlarge, bulk-up, firm and shape the man’s upper chest area. The aim of pectoral implants is to create the natural appearance of a defined and toned chest, or to correct congenital defects. Pectoral implants do not add power or strength to the muscle.

How is the Pectoral Implants procedure carried out?
The surgeon makes an incision in the armpit and creates a pocket in the muscle. Solid silicone implants are inserted within the pocket under the existing pectoral muscle. The incision is then sutured. In some cases, liposuction is also carried out for more effective results.

How long will Pectoral Implants last?
Pectoral implants are permanent.

How popular is this type of surgery?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons around 1,300 men had pectoral implants in the USA in 2008.

Duration of procedure/surgery:
Pectoral implant surgery generally takes between 1 to 2 hours to complete.

Days admitted:
None. Pectoral implants surgery is carried out on an outpatient basis.

Anesthesia:
Pectoral implants are inserted under general anesthesia.

Recovery:
- Patients regain use of the upper body muscles within a week and full levels of upper body activity can be resumed in one month to six weeks. - Patients are advised to take between 1 and 2 weeks off work.

Risks:
Pectoral implants surgery is a fairly straightforward procedure but there are some risks. Risks include: - Infection. - Bleeding. - Asymmetrical end result. - Implant displacement. - Muscle or nerve damage.

After care:
- Patients are advised not to lift the arms after surgery until the dressings are removed. - After the dressings have been removed, the patient follows a program of gentle exercises to speed healing, promote a full range of arm movements and allow the implant to settle. - Patients take prescribed medication to lessen any pain.
