What is Cheek Dimple surgery?
Facial enhancement surgery to create a cheek dimple is also known as a Dimpleplasty. A cheek dimple is a depression in the skin, created by a division in the zygomatic muscle, which is used for smiling and facial expressions. Dimples exist naturally on the cheeks but not everyone has them. Cheek dimple surgery creates an artificial dimple. Natural dimples only show when the person is smiling but cheek dimple surgery creates a dimple that’s present all the time. Cheek dimple creation involves cutting the cheek to create a dip in the skin.

How is a Cheek Dimple created?
Cheek dimple surgery is carried out as follows:
  • The surgeon cuts through the inner cheek and cheek muscle with a biopsy instrument to remove a circular core.
  • The gap in the muscle is tacked with dissolvable stitches and a surgical knot is created to hold the dimple in place.
  • As the sutures dissolve, a layer of permanent scar tissue remains to maintain the dimple.

Duration of procedure/surgery:
Cheek dimple surgery is a quick procedure that takes between 10 and 30 minutes to complete.

Days admitted:
None. Cheek dimple creation is completed on an outpatient basis.

Anesthesia:
Surgery to create a cheek dimple is completed under local anesthesia.

Recovery:
Cheek dimple surgery is a quick procedure and involves a minimal recovery time. The main side-effects will be bruising and swelling but you will be able to carry out all normal activities after the procedure.

Risks:
The cheek dimple creation procedure is quick, minimally invasive and usually results in no serious complications. Minor risks include: - Bruising and swelling. - Bleeding and infection. - Risk of losing the cheek dimple if the suture is pulled out of place after the procedure. - Long-term risks are unknown as this is a relatively new form of cosmetic surgery.

After care:
- Rinse the mouth with oral antiseptic mouthwash on a regular basis to prevent infection. - Antibiotics may be prescribed after the cheek dimple surgery to reduce the risk of infection. - Cheek dimple surgery can be reversed by cutting the sutures in the first few weeks after the procedure if the results are not acceptable.
