What is Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation, also known as breast enhancement or breast enlargement, is a procedure were silicone or saline breast implants are placed either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle. This process is designed to add size, shape, and fullness to the breast.

What are the different types of Surgery?
  • Breast Lift
    A Breast lift is a procedure that raises and reshapes sagging breasts. Breast lifts can be carried out with or without the insertion of breast implants. Much depends upon the physical anatomy and needs of the patient.

How popular is Breast Augmentation?
According to a survey carried out by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons , doctors in the USA performed about 330,000 breast augmentation procedures in 2006.

How long does a Breast Augmentation last?
It is not known how long a Breast Augmentation will last. Breast augmentation may or may not last a lifetime. This all depends upon the manufacturing procedure and other unknown factors.

Duration of procedure/surgery:
This procedure normally takes from between one to two hours.

Usually one night in hospital

Anesthesia:
General Anaesthesia

Recovery:
A support bra will need to be worn for the first 4 weeks. No sport activity should be engaged in and heavy lifting should be avoided for 4 weeks. Generally, the patient can return to work after a few days to 1 week.

Risks:
The following risks may arise by a Breast Augmentation:

- Bleeding, swelling and bruising
- Hardening of the breast
- Asymmetry
- Problems with Mammography
- Autoimmune Disease
- Cancer

After care:
The patient will need to have several follow up visits, so that the doctor can check on the progress made. These will also include regular mammograms to check that there are no problems with the patients breasts.
